Oral dermatology
Mucosal lesions and biopsy
Like the skin, the oral mucosa serves as a barrier between the inside of the mouth and the outside environment.
Just as the skin can be affected by various conditions, the oral mucosa may also develop issues ranging from minor, unusual appearances to more significant problems caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, medications, or trauma.
In some cases, a biopsy may be performed under local anesthesia, and the tissue sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis to confirm or establish a diagnosis.
In general, any unusual lesion in the mouth that does not disappear within two weeks should be evaluated by a dentist.
